Andy Buck is a furniture maker, sculptor, and educator.
Andy spent his youth in Geneva, Switzerland while his father, an expert in tropical medicine, worked for the World Health Organization. Immersed in an international environment, Buck gained an appreciation for the many cultural and geographical wonders of the world. Inspired first by African and Oceanic artifacts through his father’s frequent travels, his fascination with unique artistic perspectives and global interpretations of the natural world has guided his creative practice as a furniture designer and artist.
An active maker for more than 30 years, Andy Buck has exhibited his work in galleries and museums throughout the United States, Europe, and Australia. His furniture and sculpture brings together traditional craftsmanship with investigations in form, colorful painted surfaces, and pattern.
Andy Buck maintains a studio in Upstate New York and is currently a full professor and program chair for the Furniture Design Program at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
He has lectured at many universities including Oregon College of Art & Craft, San Diego State University, RISD, Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Wisconsin, ANU (Canberra), Univ. S. Australia (Adelaide), and venues such as the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery and the Hui No’ Eau Visual Arts Center in Maui, HI. Andy has also given workshops at Anderson Ranch, Haystack, Penland, Peters Valley, WoodDust Australia, and NZ Centre for Fine Woodworking.
Andy Buck holds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Art & Design, Museum of Applied Art, Frankfurt, and the Boston Museum of Fine Art, and is included in many private and public collections.
